A frame could be trees, logs, windows, or anything that can "frame" the subject.
Frames are typically darker than the subject. The light difference allows reader's attention to be drawn right to the subject.

I love photography -- looking at it and taking the pictures. I especially like taking pictures of statues for whatever reason. I love messing around with the camera angle and the shadows. Shadows, I believe, are really important in the way photographs are viewed.
